MOBILE STEAM EDUCATION PROGRAMS
"We operate in the ocean and we conduct our operations as role models with the upmost respect for the ocean; we train and educate our guests and students to do the same."
The cross-curricular STEAM based Marine and Freshwater programs were created by the passionate and experienced team at Dive2U in adherence to Victorian and Australian Curriculum requirements. Our hands-on and inclusive learning opportunities engage students to make authentic connections within and across local and global environmental issues and. Such connections help empower students, and when provided with learning opportunities that develop the knowledge and skills required to take proactive action, they are inspired toward positive conservation solutions and environmental ambassadorship
We offer a select range of contemporary topics that can be tailored to a classroom focus, student age range, learning preference and/or ability; and can be delivered via a variety of platforms including audio/visual presentations, incursions with interactive workshops, and/or surface and in-water excursions.
HOW TO DECIDE?
It's a simple 2 step process:
Step 1 - choose your lesson topic/s
Step 2 - choose your fun and interactive delivery method/s.
JUST WANT AN ACTIVITY?
Not a problem! All of our activities can be booked for the pure adventures that they are. But be warned, students may not want to go back to school afterwards!
For further information about our topics and activities scroll down or send us an email with any questions or for a quote.

TOPIC OVERVIEWS
Human Impacts
With a human population nearing 8 billion, anthropogenic (human) impacts are occurring at an ever-increasing rate. Workshops explore a range of positive and negative socio-economic and environmental impacts on aquatic ecosystems. The sustainability focus incorporates links between, and impacts of, human activities from a local to global scale. Topics include: Climate Change (i.e. global warming, species translocation, ocean acidification); Tourism and Population Growth (i.e. marine debris, fishing, shipping, coastal hardening, invasive species, and aquaculture).
Examples of subtopics:
-
The problem with hot, acidic water
-
You don’t belong here
-
All rivers lead to the sea
-
Plastic, plastic everywhere
-
Technology friend or foe?
-
Where did the beach go?
Conservation Biology
Conservation Biology is a multidisciplinary science that integrates natural science (i.e. biology), conservation science (i.e. marine park management) and social science (i.e. sociology), in a proactive approach to marine conservation. Workshops focus on environmental sustainability at local to global scales and include: biodiversity concepts; marine park classification and management (i.e. micro-plastic surveys, litter sort and report) and innovations involved in improving marine protection measures (i.e. litter trap evolution).
Examples of subtopics:
-
Yellowstone of the sea
-
Operation clean-up, sort and report
-
Funservation in citizen science!
-
Why is this beach so special anyway?
-
Debris - human or natural?
Aquatic Ecology
Aquatic Ecology studies marine and freshwater ecosystems and interactions, and in particular relationships between organisms, and their environment/s. Workshops explore the amazing biodiversity in our waterways (i.e. algae, oxygen and carbon sinks); relationships between organisms (i.e. food webs, predation symbiosis); and factors affecting the distribution and abundance of living and non-living species (i.e. intertidal zonation).
Examples of subtopics:
-
Why do I live here up here?
-
Do you eat me or do I eat you?
-
Good algae versus bad algae
-
I just like hanging out with you
Oceanography
Oceanography blends the geological, physical and chemical sciences that study the oceans. Workshops investigate ocean circulation and ecosystems, plate tectonics, sea floor geology, chemical and physical ocean properties, and how they influence the abundance and distribution of indigenous and non-indigenous aquatic organisms.
Examples of subtopics:
-
Hot property- Home in a volcano
-
Living deep in the muck - Abyssal plains
-
Savannah of the sea
-
Underwater cities
-
How did all this rubbish get here?
-
Where did my shell go?
ACTIVITY OVERVIEWS
INCURSIONS
Aquatic Science Presentation
The STEAM based presentation is an onsite learning experience based on the chosen topic; customised alongside in class curricular requirements as well as student learning preferences and abilities. The presentation includes an evolving audio-visual presentation followed by a choice of engaging activities including beach-trash art workshops, aquatic displays, interactive touch tanks or a SCUBA close-up tank and equipment demonstration. The presentation is a great stand-alone lesson, and/ or to supplement excursion based activities as a formative/summative assessment of topic knowledge and skills, pre/post excursions.
School Pool Safari
The School Pool Safari involves a snorkel, and/or SCUBA skills session at the students' school pool or local pool. Qualified Snorkel and Dive Instructors conduct a skills and equipment briefing before entering the water. Skills sessions are followed by a fun and entertaining session where students can practice using SCUBA equipment and partake in activities such as the hoop swim, bubble gun, torpedos and other underwater games. These activities encourage students to further develop watermanship skills and confidence for a more enjoyable, and improved connection to the wider aquatic environment. This activity can be conducted as a stand-alone session, or prior to in-water snorkel and/or SCUBA focused excursions.
EXCURSIONS
Live Dive!
The exclusive LIVE DIVE session is an awesome technological experience where students interact with a scuba diver without getting wet! Explore the underwater environment with a live video feed and 2-way communication from any jetty, pier, barge, pontoon or boat. This exclusive experience is suitable for all ages and class sizes and can incorporate any lesson focus. This experience is additionally suited to provide additional activities to involve students not able to participate in traditional in-water activities. Certified teachers are invited to assist our divers and appear on camera to their students. Full face mask training can be provided prior at additional costs should teachers wish to 'host' the session underwater.
SCUBA Safari
The SCUBA Safari excursion exposes students to the amazing underwater world using full SCUBA equipment. Experiencing the underwater world through SCUBA diving is often life changing, and when linked with education and inspiration, empowers students to become Aquatic Ambassadors. Students are provided with a basic SCUBA diving skills session with a qualified and experienced PADI instructor(s). The SCUBA skills session is followed by a guided dive where students explore and directly engage with the marine environment. This activity is tailored to the topic focus, and the students may for example: observe marine organism relationships and interactions; survey species abundance; identify indigenous versus non-indigenous species; or investigate human impacts through an in-water debris collect-sort-report activity.
The SCUBA Safari has strict minimum age requirements. Students must be a minimum of 10 years of age to participate in scuba diving activities and complete and pass the required medical questionnaire. If weather conditions do not permit safe operations on the day, SCUBA Safari’s can be relocated to alternate sites, into a swimming pool, and/or supplemented with alternate excursions to make the most of the weather. Additional fees may apply (e.g. pool fees).
Snorkel Safari
The Snorkel Safari excursion offers an in-water, interpretative learning experience; in which students directly apply their scientific learning to the aquatic environment. Students partake in a pre-snorkel equipment and skills briefing and in-water skills session before participating in an activity. Activities may include a Indigenous/Non-Indigenous species survey, marine debris identification followed by an on-land sort and report session, or quantitative data collection such as through a species abundance or distribution survey. This excursion is suited to late Primary ages and onwards and only requires minimal aquatic confidence.
Ramble Safari
The Ramble Safari excursion is great opportunity for kids to actively engage with their local environment, whether it is a bay, peninsula, river, lake, rock pool, sandy beach or mangrove forest. This interpretative learning activity provides interactive delivery of a wide range of aquatic STEAM based lessons, and can be adapted to suit any location and weather condition. This activity suits all ages and is great as a stand alone activity, as an add on or as a filler activity between sessions.
Extras available include:
-
extended sessions for additional topics
-
multiple sessions for multiple classes
